Like store-bought dry and wet food, Nom Nom's recipes provide complete and balanced nutrition, but instead, it's in the form of whole, gently cooked ingredients.
Fresh dog food appeals to people who want to feed their pups something other than processed foods. Many pet owners also rave about the convenience of auto-shipping. I wanted to see firsthand if it lives up to the hype, and I was impressed.
For this Nom Nom dog food review, the brand provided me with samples to feed my 2-year-old pit mix, Lyla, over the course of two weeks. I tested three of the six recipe offerings.

Nom Nom won't bill you until the final day you're able to make changes to your order, which is usually one week before your scheduled delivery but varies by customer.
Customization: You can choose to receive multiple recipes in your box or stick to a single one. If you selection options for picky eaters, food allergies, or poor coat health, Nom Nom will recommend specific recipes. However, the company doesn't offer customized recipes to accommodate additional preferences, food allergies, or intolerances. It's always a good idea to consult with your vet if your dog has any specific dietary concerns.
Delivery: Once you confirm your selections, your food will ship within 1 to 2 business days. You can also pause or adjust the delivery date through your account before the confirmation deadline.
Packaging: Each delivery comes in a large, insulated box with ice packs to keep the food fresh. The recipes are packed in vacuum-sealed plastic bags that need to be stored in the freezer. You'll need to use your own containers to store thawed food in the refrigerator.
Our review of Nom Nom dog food
After placing my Nom Nom order, I received email updates when it shipped and when it was out for delivery. The box arrived quickly and was very cold, lined with insulation and filled with reusable gel ice packs that kept the food fully frozen.
My first impressions were very positive. The meals were individually packaged and bundlers were secured with rubber bands, making them easy to store in the freezer. I also got a good look at the food's appearance — if I didn't know it was for dogs, I would have thought they were frozen meals for humans.
I try to minimize waste whenever I can, so I was disappointed by the amount of packaging. While I appreciated that the box was insulated with recyclable and reusable materials, I ended up with four panels of insulation that were tricky to dispose of. I do like having extra ice packs in my freezer, but if I ordered from Nom Nom monthly, they would start to pile up. Overall, the packaging was much more than what comes with Lyla's usual canned and bagged food.
I thawed each pack on the kitchen counter for about 12 hours before serving it to Lyla. The food came with clear feeding instructions, and each meal was individually packaged. For the most part, Lyla enjoyed the Nom Nom meals. She wasn't a huge fan of the Chicken Cuisine recipe, but she eagerly ate the Turkey Fare and Pork Potluck options. It's important to note that subscribers are limited to selecting just one or two recipes per box, but for this review, I tested three.
In the first few days, she licked her bowl clean after every Turkey and Pork, something she rarely does. I don't think her interest in the food had anything to do with its appearance, but mine did. Each meal looked like a freshly prepared dish for humans. I was really impressed by this, considering the food had been shipped frozen and then thawed before feeding.
Since Lyla tends to get bored with her food, I wasn't surprised when she started turning up her nose after a week of eating the same meals. To encourage her to finish, I added bone broth to the last few meals.
Cons to consider
If you're considering switching to a fresh dog food delivery service like Nom Nom, be aware that it comes with a price tag. A two-week supply of meals for a 50-pound dog costs just under $200. This is a significant expense, especially when there are equally nutritious canned and fresh foods available for less.
With the option to select only two recipes, Nom Nom may not be the best choice for dogs who enjoy variety. For that, you may want to consider The Farmer's Dog, which offers the option to select up to three recipes. However, the brand offers fewer protein options (beef, turkey, pork, chicken) and only one grain-inclusive recipe.
