Apple has officially announced the iPhone 7 Plus

Apple announced the iPhone 7 Plus on Wednesday.

It’s the higher end of two new devices. Apple also released a less expensive, smaller iPhone 7.

Price and release date

The iPhone 7 Plus will go on sale September 16. Preorders start September 9.

It will cost $769 for a 32GB model. It also comes in 128GB and 256GB versions.

It will come in two new colors, a glossy jet black and black.

Battery life

Apple says the iPhone 7 Plus will have an average of 1 to 2 more hours of battery life compared to the iPhone 7.

The iPhone 7 Plus is equipped with a new kind of camera.

It's actually two 12-megapixel cameras side by side; one features a normal wide-angle lens, the other a telephoto lens.

This lets you zoom anywhere from 2x to 10x without making the photo have a lower resolution, as the current iPhone zoom requires.

The dual-lens camera will be available only on the iPhone 7 Plus, not the smaller iPhone 7.

It will also be able to take photos with a shallow depth of field through a free software update later this year; it creates a cool effect called "bokeh" wherein the background is blurred in contrast to the sharp foreground.

The front camera has been upgraded to 7 megapixels, from 5 megapixels in the iPhone 6s, and should take much better photos than that older iPhone.

The iPhone 7 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen with a 1080 x 1920 screen. That’s the same size as last year’s iPhone 6S. But the display has been improved, with a 25% brighter display and the ability to display more colors.

It’s powered by Apple’s newest A10 Fusion chip, which Apple says is 50% faster than last year's A9 chip.

Apple said it will have a second stereo speaker with an increased dynamic range.

The home button has been redesigned to simulate a click with solid-state motors, which should help it last longer.

Water-resistant

Another big improvement is that the iPhone 7 Plus will be significantly more water-resistant than previous versions. Apple says it is water- and dust-resistant. The company published a short video of the phone taking a bath.

Apple has removed the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 Plus. It is offering new wireless headphones, including a set of wireless headphones called AirPods.

Older headphones can plug in through the Lightning port with an adapter.
